How to Convert Subtitle Files

Four steps to convert any subtitle or transcript format — no software, no upload, no account.

Step 1

Paste the text

Paste your script into the input area, or drop a .txt file. Each non-empty line becomes one caption; blank lines are ignored, so paragraph breaks cost you nothing.

Step 2

Set "Seconds per line"

The field sets how long each line stays on screen — 3 seconds by default. Cues run back to back from 00:00:00, so the total length is lines multiplied by seconds.

Step 3

Check the WebVTT output

The output panel shows the finished file, WEBVTT header and all. Use the Offset field to push everything later if the track has to start after an intro.

Step 4

Copy or download the .vtt

Click Download to save a .vtt file ready for an HTML5 video track or a manual caption upload on YouTube or Vimeo. Nothing leaves your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

They are synthesized, not recovered — the converter has no audio to align to. Every non-empty line gets an equal slot: the first starts at 00:00:00, and each one after it starts where the previous ended, using the "Seconds per line" value. If the captions have to match a real soundtrack, treat this as a first draft and fix the timings in the subtitle editor.

WebVTT opens with a WEBVTT header line and separates seconds from milliseconds with a period; SRT numbers each cue and uses a comma. Browsers need VTT for the native caption track element; most desktop players and editors prefer SRT. If you need the other one, use the TXT to SRT converter.
