How to Convert Subtitle Files

Four steps to convert any subtitle or transcript format — no software, no upload, no account.

Step 1

Paste or drop the .md

Paste your Markdown into the input area or drop the file. Blank lines are ignored, so the spacing in your source costs nothing.

Step 2

The markup is stripped

Heading marks, blockquote marks, list bullets, thematic breaks, bold and italic markers, inline code ticks and link syntax are removed — the link text stays, the URL goes. Fenced code blocks and images are dropped whole.

Step 3

Set "Seconds per line"

Each surviving line becomes one cue shown for this many seconds, laid end to end from 00:00:00. Three seconds is the default.

Step 4

Copy or download the .srt

Download saves a .srt ready for a video player or an upload. Use the subtitle editor afterwards if the timings have to match real audio.

Frequently Asked Questions

The marks go and the text stays: a line reading "## Scene 2" becomes a cue reading "Scene 2", and "- We shipped it" becomes "We shipped it". A link keeps its anchor text and loses its URL. Fenced code blocks and images are dropped entirely — neither has anything to say out loud. If you want a heading gone as well, delete the line before converting.

They are synthesized. Markdown has no timing, so every line gets the same slot, set by "Seconds per line", starting at 00:00:00. Nothing is aligned to audio, because there is no audio here to align to.

Because one line in becomes one cue out. A 60-word paragraph on a single line becomes a single 3-second caption nobody can read. Split long prose into caption-length lines in the input — one short sentence per line — and the output is usable.
